More efficient inspection of crane runways
The crane runway measurement method developed by VTT and Konecranes is a prime example of how combining several technologies and utilising ICT can create new, efficient solutions.
Runways in good condition are vital for proper crane function. In creating the new method, VTT and Konecranes successfully combined embedded systems, ICT and software technology, optic measurement technology and precision engineering design. A remote-controlled measurement trolley, together with a laser measurement device, gathers information about the straightness and condition of runways. Analysis software further refines the gathered information for concluding decisions.
The new method makes installation and maintenance work on runways more efficient. The measurement prism is transported by a remote-controlled robot, with no manual work required. The time required for measurements has clearly fallen, meaning that a factory line need no longer remain inactive for an extended period. Instead of days, the measurement at best takes only a few hours. The solution is also much safer.
The new measurement method was first implemented in the US. The service product is now part of Konecranes’ service offering, and the new method has already been used to carry out hundreds of measurements.
