VTT: Open, modular terminal architecture NoTA creates huge business opportunities
NoTA (Network on Terminal Architecture) is taking its first steps into
commercial exploitation. The community, business models and practices are
getting a concrete shape. The technology is also evolving outside its original
use in mobile devices into embedded and ubiquitous systems, creating huge
business opportunities. NoTA eases also the adoption of 3rd party technology
VTT states that the NoTA device interconnect protocol and the service based
subsystem architecture has become a prominent alternative also business-wise.
The industrial presentations about testing and integration experiences and
demonstrations using various platforms such as Symbian S60, Maemo, Google
Android and Apple iPhone are concrete examples of maturity, openness and
usability of NoTA as a solution for whole mobile industry.
Nokia Devices proposed NoTA DIP (Device Interconnect Protocol) and MIPI DDB/IMF stacks as extension architectures for mobile devices. This establishes NoTA technology’s role as essential part of the future product and applications. NoTA DIP is also evolving to a service sharing solution across device boundaries. The ability to share services with open solutions creates new business and application opportunities and simplifies the software development. NoTA DIP will change the mobile device ecosystems by creating open interfaces for new extensions and features.

Practical experiences in developing NoTA-based subsystems have been revealed by leading multimedia technology providers. For example, Plug-n-Play - OpenMAX multimedia acceleration through NoTA was developed in 12 weeks confirming the promises of lower integration and support costs and faster time to market.
VTT and Nokia announced an open source launch of Smart-M3 interoperability solution developed in Artemis SOFIA project and Finnish national DIEM project. The software is available under BSD licence. The Smart-M3 concept is a light-weight and scalable solution for information level interoperability and it extends NoTA into smart environments. According to VTT, the Smart-M3 opens the embedded information for new uses, creates a possibility to link virtual and physical worlds in a simple and efficient way, and revolutionizes application development by simplifying the co-operation of existing devices.
According to the CTO of Notava Corporation Risto Suoranta the future of NoTA is promising. The business around NoTA has started to grow and NoTA’s capability to support communication outside the device creates huge possibilities for new innovations also for smaller companies.
VTT organized the 2nd international NoTA conference in Silicon valley, California from 30 Sept. to 1st Oct. at the Cypress Semiconductor premises. NoTA development was presented with 11 demonstrations and 16 presentations from industry and academia.
