VTT to open development environment for future technologies and applications at Ideapark in Lempäälä, Finland

VTT Ihme environment to develop experimental services
In June 2010, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will open the VTT Ihme environment at Ideapark in Lempäälä, Finland. The environment will focus on the development of new experiential recreational services in cooperation with businesses and consumers. Above all, VTT Ihme will provide a shared co-design environment for the design of services based on ubiquitous computing technologies.
VTT Ihme (Miracle in Eng.) will focus on the exhibition and development of new
user interface solutions and new types of service content. It will allow
businesses and consumers to participate in the service design process. The
environment is designed for the development of new user interface solutions
and virtual environments, and for experimenting with various content
virtualization solutions. By enabling the integration of virtual and physical
environments, the environment will serve both designers and users efficiently.
VTT Ihme can be transferred easily into other environments during a project.
In
the 61-square-metre facility, users can, for example, play virtual games or
experience aesthetic sensations on the pressure-sensing floor. In the
environment, users can visit travel destinations virtually. VTT is also
planning to allow users to experience one of the Expo 2010 Shanghai China
demonstrations in the facility. A demonstration on Finnish nature utilizes an
augmented reality technology developed by VTT.
VTT Ihme will
function as a development environment for the IHME research project until 15
August 2010. The main objective of the project is to develop techniques for
quickly testing and demonstrating ubicomp ideas, and for further developing
those ideas.
Members of the UBIT project include VTT,
Ideapark Koy, Luova Tampere, Aurinkomatkat, Neuroagent, Lempäälän kehitys,
Nokia Corporation and Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and
Innovation.
What is ubiquitous computing?
Ubiquitous
computing or ambient intelligence functions in its environment without the
awareness of users. The use of information technology, electronic components,
computer networks and sensor systems allows objects, information and people to
be connected, creating new possibilities for services and business.
