Research background and current research topics

Pentti has made his M. Sc. (Dipl. Eng) and D. Sc (Tech.) in Control and Systems Engineering and worked as Head Assistant and Acting Professor of Control and Systems Engineering (part time) at the University of Oulu. He has experience of 30 years working, as a researcher and project leader in numerous projects including ten years’ experience as Research Manager within the scope of machine automation and advanced interactive systems.

In 2004 he entered service science and business research by starting the preparation of the VTT’s theme programme called “Service Beyond”. From 2005 until 2008 he was the Programme Manager of the four years programme. During that time his interest encompassed development and design of services and service systems for citizens, for living and for industry with or without simultaneous development of enabling technologies. Main focus of the programme was on three application areas: 1) Services for citizens - wellbeing and quality of life, 2) Industrial services - enhanced human technology interaction for mobile workers and 3) services for living - living in buildings.

Currently his interests are focused on ICT and services where his work includes the coordination of VTT’s research activities within the areas of Service Science and Service Business and the leading of the ICT and Services team. As a coordinator his duties are focused on competencies and applications for the benefit of industry and public sector in modelling, design and development of services and service systems. The duties of the team leader include ICT applications for buildings encompassing building automation, services, service concepts as well as models and processes for the benefit of industry.

Pentti has also been the lead editor in VTT Symposium on Service Science, Technology and Business and Scientific Activities in Service Science and Business at VTT. He has published close to 90 publications mostly concerning various fields of Mechatronics. Latest publications deal with Facility Management Services, their benefits and obstacles in service procurement.
