Research background and current research topics

As Research Professor, Veikko Rouhiainen was appointed to be the coordinator of VTT's security research at the beginning of 2005, and the leader of the Security Key Technology Action (a strategic research area of VTT). He is also coordinating the "safety and reliability" area in VTT's strategic research coordinating group.

Since 1978, Veikko has been working at VTT as a Researcher, a Senior Research Scientist, and since 1993 as a Research Professor of Industrial Risk Management. His main tasks have been to develop safety, risk and reliability analysis methods, and also apply them in different kinds of industries. His doctorate was related to risk analysis (1991). As group leader of the risk analysis group he participated in the planning and direction of several research projects and programmes. From 2001 to 2005 he led VTT's "Safety and Reliability" Technology Theme (Research Programme), which included 9 research projects.

While at VTT, Veikko has been particularly active in the international research community. His activities include membership in standardisation committees, dozens of conference organisation committees, and conference programme committees, and editorial boards of journals. With many connections to industry and interest groups in various kinds of research projects, he is also a member of the National Expert Committee of Safety Management and -Technology (2001-), the EUROTECH Security Research Group (2005-), and the Advisory Board of VTT´s System
Certification (2005-).

Veikko has been a Docent at Tampere University of Technology since 1993. He has also acted as an opponent or an examination committee member of doctoral dissertations at the Tampere University of Technology. From 1991 to 2006, he was the Teacher in Risk Analysis and Reliability Engineering at the Tampere University of Technology.

2007 – present
Research Professor and Research Coordinator of the "Safety and security" research in VTT Strategic Research. Current research interests are focused particularly on the security assurance of citizens, society and enterprises, safety management and -engineering, and industrial risk management.
