The Finnish EcoCity for the Future in China

The project is examining the possibility of building a small city in China by utilizing the most advanced technology and products available in design and construction so that all aspects are based on sustainable principles.
The concept of the EcoCity was introduced in the project's 'Live in Future Home Today - Finnish High-Tech EcoCity' preliminary seminar in Tianjin, China, between 17 and 20 April 2007
The demand for an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly form of society is continuously increasing. In rapidly growing areas, such as in cities in China, there is a great demand for various solutions of sustainable development. These solutions play a significant role in construction, traffic, data communication, water resources management and decentralised energy production.
In his book Syntymättömien sukupolvien Eurooppa (Europe Future, Southeast University Press, 2005), Professor Eero Paloheimo suggests several solutions for building an economically efficient and environmentally friendly society. Based on Mr. Paloheimo's ideas, VTT's diverse competence in technology together with the expertise of key Finnish companies is enabling the construction of the first model city in Tianjin.
Completely new combinations of technological competencies and their resulting products will be utilized in the construction project. These include, among other things, a closed water system, integrated telecommunication, a traffic positioning system, waste management, recycling and car-free passenger traffic.
The construction of an EcoCity is opening new export opportunities into China's huge markets. This, together with the support of companies already familiar with China, will mean the first step towards those markets for some companies.
