Project overview

The project’s goal is a cost-effective, volume-scale, roll-to-roll manufacturing technology for the realization of flexible OLED devices on a web. ROLLED is funded by the IST program of the European Commission's 6th Framework. VTT is coordinating the project.

Work packages

WP1 - Fabrication of a complete OLED device on a web using R2R manufacturing
Developing a method to fabricate a complete OLED device on a flexible substrate using roll-to-roll manufacturing technology.
Developing a patternable, transparent, conducting coating on PET foils based on ITO nanoparticles and deposited by a continuous wet chemical roll-to-roll process. Fabrication of a complete OLED device on a web using R2R manufacturing

WP2 - Patterning methods applicable to R2R processing and realization of arbitrary size and shape pixels and flexible displays
Developing a patterning technology for OLED and/or PLED devices that will be applied to the roll-to-roll fabrication process on flexible substrates.

WP3 - Encapsulation of the fabricated OLEDs
Developing front and rear encapsulations for OLEDs with low O2 and H2O permeability.

WP4 - Demonstrators
Fabrication of OLED demonstrators using roll-to-roll-compatible manufacturing techniques. The demonstrators will consist of several pre-defined arbitrary size and shape pixels with one or more emission colours.

Challenges of Roll-to-roll fabrication:

• Roll-to-roll patterned In2O3:Sn (ITO) on plastic or conductive polymer anode

• Roll-to-roll printing of organics and cathode

• Efficient, stable, printable and patternable OLED materials

• Encapsulation
