A main goal of bioenergy research is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to the production of electricity by creating preconditions for increased use of biomass fuels for different purposes and size classes. On the other hand, our goal is to develop new technologies and new solutions to produce low-emission transportation fuels based on biomaterials and bio-based products replacing fossil fuels. In these research fields, our goal is to strengthen the significance of Finnish bioenergy expertise on the international market and to strengthen the production and competitiveness of bioenergy on a global scale.

The research at the Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry and Reaction Engineering of Åbo Akademi is focused on three areas: catalysis, kinetics and modeling of chemical reactors. These areas coincide very well with the primary goal of industrial chemistry and reaction engineering: the utilization of chemical reactions for the industrial production of chemicals. The objective is to maintain and develop knowledge and skills in catalyst production and characterization, kinetics and mechanisms of catalytical reactions, analysis of complicated chemical reaction systems and also modeling and optimization of chemical reactors. Our research forms a logical connection from synthesis in laboratory scale to production in industrial scale. Our knowledge has been applied in many areas; from the environmentally orientated catalysis and production of biofuels to synthesis of fine and special chemicals. We are a part of the national Centre of Excellence PCC – Process Chemistry Center, appointed by the Academy of Finland. The overall theme in research by the PCC is molecular processtechnology.
