Goodbye oil dependence – hello bioplastics
Scientists at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland are developing new sources of bioplastics to substitute the use of crude oil. Biotechnological means can replace traditional petrochemical methods that consume the rapidly depleting stocks of the world’s non-renewable natural resources. Biomass such as straw and waste generated by the agricultural sector and forestry contains sugars, which with the help of microbes can be used as raw material for bioplastics.
VTT has developed new groundbreaking technology for producing bioplastics from renewable plant matter for NatureWorks LLC, USA. NatureWorks LLC specialises in developing and manufacturing sustainable plastics for reducing carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions in an economically viable manner. Uses of the company’s bioplastics include food packaging, home textiles and a variety of components.
One tangible example of the many applications of bioplastics is a bottle made with Ingeo, a material developed by NatureWorks LLC. Ingeo is a 100% plant-based material, and no oil is used in the manufacturing process.
