VTT centrally involved in the development of Chemigate Oy:s new industrial process for the production of bio-based paper chemicals
Technology: A new industrial dry modification process for starch based paperchemicals
Features and benefits: The new process provides cost effective
production of new types of chemically modified starch materials used as
bio-based paper coating binders or paper strength enhancers.
The new continuous dry modification process notably increases production efficiency by omitting the energy-intensive drying step and enabling more effective use of modification chemicals. The process also facilitates production of new generation starch products.
Customer case: In spring 2012 Chemigate Oy successfully started a new dry modification process for starch, called Scirocco. VTT has extensive knowledge of starch chemistry, and in the development of the process VTT process chemistry research scientists have been acting as specialists in starch modification chemistry. A large number of test runs have also been performed at VTT’s pilot plant facilities in Rajamäki relating to the scale-up of production recipes. Close co-operation on development of the Scirocco process started in 2009, and continues with the development of new product grades.
Seppo Lamminmäki, the CEO of Chemigate Oy, remarked that co-operation had been excellent, and drew particular attention to VTT’s flexibility and the possibility of combining skilled research and scale-up at the pilot plant.
