Hybrid media enters school books

Hybrid media is a combination of print and digital media. In hybrid media different technologies are integrated into printed products, which increase products’ interactivity and improve competitiveness.

Hybrid media opens new product, service and business opportunities for the whole media value chain. VTT has brought to the market new technology concepts from this field. One such example is Hybrid School Book, which was developed as part of the “Learning by Hybrid Media”-project.

Pupils test hybrid school book

The aim of Learning by Hybrid Media -project was to combine printed and digital learning material with the help of VTT’s image recognition technology in order to enrich and enhance the learning experience.

The hybrid school book was developed in several stages based on user experience. This was done in order to ensure that the users are able to take the new solution into use. In the development work the needs and motivation of teachers and pupils were considered.

As a result of the project VTT brought into the school a hybrid school book in which traditional school book was combined with a mobile phone. The chosen subject was English as a foreign language. The main user groups were teachers, pupils and parents.

The hybrid school book was well received. Motivation of teachers and pupils was high, and the attitudes of parents supported the use of hybrid book. The experience suggests that the mobile hybrid book is a suitable learning material for primary education.

The hybrid school book is being further developed and it is possible to bring it to market within three years.

Novel product concepts and new business by hybrid media

Hybrid media technologies, such as optical codes, image recognition and RFID-tags, can be used both in adding new functionality to existing products or to create novel product concepts.

The approach and technologies used in the hybrid school book- project can be adapted to other areas from advertising to packages and from catalogues to interactive labels.

By utilizing VTT’s diverse competencies covering the new hybrid media technologies, user centric product concept design and printing and finishing technologies, it is possible to develop new competitive media and packaging applications and related technologies and materials.
