Materials technology plays critical role in the product solutions aimed at material and energy efficiency in accordance with sustainable development principles. VTT Materials research focuses on enabling nanotechnology and functional material technology in various industrial applications, tailored biomass-based materials and materials for emerging energy technologies.
The aims of materials research at VTT is to provide its customers technology that enables the products to be made with higher functionality, develop competitive production methods, and add value to products in order to help them stand out from competitors. These goals will be met by developing
advanced and product-oriented solutions based on renewable materials such as
high-performance biopolymers, and new fibre structures and products
tailored functional industrial and consumer products, including functional
surface properties and adapting materials
functional material solutions for emerging energy technologies such as wind
power and fuel cells
material-efficient recyclable product.
Structural change in industry has rapidly accelerated VTT´s materials research, making it one of VTT´s core fields of activity. Material development has an important role as an enabling technology for solving global technological problems. We place special emphasis on the forest and energy industries. For example, nanotechnology is transitioning from being merely a promising technology to being an enabling technology found in large-volume products. The major trends in material technology are minimisation of environmental impact, energy conservation, product differentiation and the demand for more user friendly products.
