Context aware services
Nowadays it is difficult to concentrate on the most relevant information and services. One of the most promising solutions is context-aware services. These are digital services where the activity and situation of the user is taken into account in adopting the user interface or personalizing service provisioning.
Context-aware services research topic is an interdisciplinary field covering user-driven services design, context recognition and new user interaction technologies. Due to the user-driven nature of service creation, the research is conducted in close co-operation with end users. Therefore experimenting and service piloting are important parts of the research.
The realization of context-awareness requires new technologies in devices, in build environments and in services. We are approaching technologies and service concepts that are truly context sensitive and can receive all the benefits of these new opportunities. Mobile terminals (e.g. mobile phones) include context-sensing technologies such as positioning (e.g. GPS) and sensors (e.g. accelerometer sensors). Interacting with a large number of services and smart spaces raises a number of issues, including increased requirements for the interoperability of context-sensitive terminals and services.
There are more than 50 highly educated experts in context-aware services and user interaction technologies at VTT. We are constantly improving our research and development capabilities by investing in facilities where service development, user interaction development and usability research can successfully be carried out.
