The main research topics of embedded systems include wireless sensor networks, embedded devices, wireless sensors and mobile systems, embedded software and networked control systems. Wireless sensor networks research includes platform development, power management, localization, middleware and APIs for different applications using different standards for wireless communication. Embedded devices and wireless sensors and mobile systems also consist of hardware and software development for lightweight devices and sensors. Networked control systems provide platforms for computation intensive applications with support for distributed computing.
Technologies will provide a technology basis for large range of consumer and professional applications. Consumer applications include platforms and mobile solutions for mobile users in, for example, wellness, athletics or everyday use. Professional applications include solutions for wireless sensor networks in industrial, infra, machines and other professional environments enabling the measurement of the desired quantity and transmitting this information wirelessly to a sink using network. In addition to sensing, data transmission and signal processing, we include location information from the network.
In the future, there will be an increasing need for wireless communication and measurement and devices will have to be interoperable. We develop technology to meet this need and provide solutions which operate very efficiently in terms of measurement range and power consumption. The requirements of reliability and usability, especially in demanding applications, are among the key issues in the future.
In embedded systems research we have about a hundred researchers using modern experimental laboratory facilities for experimental tests and pilots. We manage the whole chain of research and development from specification, prototyping and piloting.
