Media technologies

Research content and applications

We develop media and visualisation technologies for enabling engaging media experiences. Our motto is: ”Relevant content for/by individuals and communities at the right time, in the right place and with appropriate devices”.

Together with our customers, we build concepts, tools, pilot systems and service models for electronic, printed, integrated and mobile media. Our research topics include media production and business models, social media platforms utilising semantics, mobile and p2p television, linking print to mobile Internet (=hybrid media), augmented reality, content engineering and visualisation, audio & video analysis and efficient wireless transmission of video, including codecs.

Future prospects

Media is a significant industry – in Finland it contributes to 2.4% of the GNP. Indirectly, its contribution is much bigger because it is a catalyst for the ICT, forest and chemistry industries. Whereas print media still represents the biggest market volume, digital media is a very fast-growing sector; its annual growth has been around 20% in recent years. In addition to the media industry, communication and visualisation solutions are needed in a variety of branches, like teleconferencing, surveillance, architecture/construction and interior design, as well as in manufacturing. Multisensory presentation technologies (3D high resolution vision, sound, touch, smell) and multimodal interaction methods (gaze, speech, gesture, touch, body movement) are needed to further extend communications capabilities. Likewise, more efficient search of multimedia content is required, as well as support for creative content collaboration between professionals and amateurs. Content should be more accurately adapted to the users’ preferences and user contexts.

Resources

More than 60 specialists conduct research in media technologies at VTT. We have top-level development and test environments for media technology research, including the OtaDigi television station (terrestrial, mobile: DVB-H) with broadcasting permissions, the VisuLab for media experience research, software platforms for social media, a cave for immersive multiview visualization in 3D, software libraries for augmented reality and a laboratory for mobile multimedia and iptv.
