Performance of civil engineering structures

Research content and applications

In this research theme our activities are focused on load-bearing structural systems, infrastructure, loading phenomena and load-structure interaction. We research and develop the structural safety and usability of frames, bridges, tunnels, roads and other structures. The main issues are the performance and durability of structures as a function of material properties, design and loading.

The disciplines of structural performance studies are based on mechanics and physics. We utilise diverse technical and natural sciences, meteorology, phenomenon and material modelling. In research and development assignments, we combine our theoretical, experimental and computational expertise and our knowledge of design methods.

VTT has advanced information technology tools and special equipment at its disposal. Our domestic and international co-operation networks help us to continuously develop our expertise.

In our activities, we combine the following fields of know-how:

  • structural performance under special conditions and loadings
  • fire safety engineering
  • geotechnical engineering
  • material modelling – natural and new materials
  • structural modelling and numerical analyses
  • full-scale and laboratory-scale experimental research
  • measuring and monitoring techniques, especially for dynamic loading
  • loading phenomena – wind, ice, snow, earthquake, vibration, impact and fatigue
  • design methods and recommendations of civil engineering structures
  • damping technologies (intermediate floors, chimneys, masts, wind power plants)
  • effects of climate change on construction
  • structural integrity of nuclear power plant structures
  • structural risk analysis studies

Future prospects

There are many factors which will also influence the civil engineering sector. The most important of these will be climate change, eco efficiency, the need for service life estimation and maintenance/repair activities. The sector will need more effective methods of developing productivity, and also to use and combine expertise developed for other industrial sectors. Integrated structural and materials modelling will become important when new materials are also developed and used for civil engineering structures.
