Research content and applications
Our research focuses on the characterisation of process and traffic emissions as well as the development of purification techniques. We also develop novel measurement applications and concepts for clean products and processes. Energy use in engines and vehicles, energy and material efficient recycling techniques, water purification techniques and support procedures for decision making (risk assessment, LCA, eco-efficiency) are also our research focuses. Our aerosol research generates continuously new nanomaterial-based applications for environmental and energy technology purposes.
In our environmental research we utilise VTT’s multidisciplinary technology competence, which enables, for instance, new versatile environmental applications based on bio-, ICT- and material technology. Our research operations, both in the field and in the laboratory, help our clients to develop their own products and processes to be more eco-friendly and eco-efficient. In addition to our research activities, we operate as experts for industry and environmental administration in national and international networks.
Environmental awareness is becoming a megatrend that will have a huge effect on the business environment. The concern over climate change, pollution, sufficiency of water resources and effects on human health will increase the need for research into environmental emissions in the near future. In particular, the environmental problems in developing countries could have catastrophic consequences. With technology-based environmental solutions the effects of environmental disasters can be mitigated. It is therefore vital to develop new low emission processes, alternative fuels as well as ecologically and materially efficient innovations.
About 70 specialists are currently working in the area of process and traffic emission at VTT. We have versatile measuring and monitoring equipment and cutting edge laboratory facilities for analysing vehicle and engine emissions, fine and nanoparticle production and waste utilisation. Our laboratory for heavy duty vehicle emissions is especially unique – there are only few like it in the whole world.
