Research content and applications
VTT develops sustainable, high performance processes and process concepts for profitable production with economical use of raw materials and energy. Our work combines laboratory and pilot-scale experimental work with modern computational engineering.
For improved understanding of the processes, advanced measurement systems are applied to extract new phenomenological data, often further refined with advanced computer simulations. We develope new biomass-based processes – with particular focus on papermaking and biorefineries. We also apply our knowledge, facilities and tools to chemical, metallurgical and energy conversion processes.
Future prospects
The pursuit to minimise the environmental impact of industrial activities while maintaining competitiveness in increased global competition will require novel process solutions, energy and material efficiency and high product quality. Simultaneously, new opportunities emerge with recent developments in bioprocessing technologies and with increasing utilisation of renewable and recycled feedstock. By means of sustainable process chemistry new products and novel process alternatives are developed for our customers.
Resources
VTT combines Europe’s leading expertise in experimental and pilot research with renowned theoretical and computational methods. We run several bench to pilot-scale facilities, which are particularly applicable for papermaking and biorefining processes. The process research is supported by our up-to-date laboratories and analytical services. Our unique process simulation software with combined thermochemistry and computational fluid dynamics is recognised worldwide.
