Research content

Transport and logistics systems and the vehicles using them have to be safe, reliable, energy efficient, environmentally friendly and easy to operate. High performance and passenger comfort are required.

Transport and logistics systems and services are developed by first studying the needs of persons and companies and then planning, solutions and concepts to meet the needs. Before the implementation of the solutions their efficiency, functionality, suitability and effects have to be evaluated. New business models and strategies are also developed in the networking international operational environment in co-operation with the public and private sectors.

The vehicle research is focused in operational loads, structural integrity and motion dynamics for the safety and reliability of vehicle design in operation. Energy efficiency is tackled by developing vehicle drag and propulsion. The vibration and noise research is targeted at improving passenger comfort.

Applications

Transport and logistics research results are used in the rationalisation of road, rail, sea and air transport, and the increase of traffic safety and decrease of detrimental environmental effects. They are used in the implementation of new technical solutions and services, improving legislation and operational preconditions for businesses and promoting transport system decision-making. Our customers include companies, public administration and communities in Finland and abroad and the European Commission.

The main applications for vehicle research are ships, aircrafts and utility vehicles. The goal is to ensure sound design and optimized operation of vehicles by applying and developing virtual modelling, computational fluid dynamics, structural analysis, structural monitoring and life cycle assessment methods in research. In addition properties of vehicles are studied by laboratory and field experiments.

Future prospects

The outsourcing of state administration functions and exploitation of private sector effectiveness bring new possibilities for the development of the financing, ownership and operating of the transport system and its services. In the fragmented operation field of the transport system VTT acts as the developer of technologies and the integrator of development

The energy efficiency and environmental impact of vehicle design are increasing research fields at VTT. New methods are needed for designers and operators for life cycle assessment of the costs and environmental impact of vehicles. 

The transport share of CO2 emissions is 20 % in Finland and this means that there is a demand for transport system rationalisation, new engine technologies and fuel development as the transport demand is constantly growing.

Resources

Vehicles, transport and logistics research is carried out at VTT by roughly 160 persons as their main job and by another 140 part time. The research can utilise a ship model basin, structural testing facilities, simulators, high computational power, field measurements,  an emission laboratory for light and heavy vehicles, a research vehicle for transport environment observation and two instrumented cars for the observation of driver behaviour.
