Information and communication technologies

The focus area involves research into the production, delivery and utilization of digital information. The objective is to enhance the competitiveness of the client companies and the renewal of society by introducing new ways of operation to industry and commerce, research and public administration.
The key challenge for the future is the wider adoption of the best practises of different businesses and industries, also known as digital convergence, due to the digitalization of everything. Not only does it improve the efficiency of existing businesses, but it also allows for the emergence of completely new ones; for example, in digital services and smart environments. The technical challenges comprise usability and user-interfaces, security and dependability, energy efficiency, social media and open innovation, diversification in computing platforms, and software production efficiency. The application areas include media, wellness, traffic, construction, and energy production.
ICT competence building takes place in VTT’s own research as well as in collaboration with the industry, often funded by the EU or Tekes. Societal impact is sought by commissioned research for companies and especially in the new SHOK-projects (Strategic Centres of Science Technology and Innovation) that aim at building systematically new business ecosystems.
