Intelligent energy grids

Changes in the current electricity field and the development of energy grids into smart ones will completely change the way we use and produce energy. Homes will be intelligent, taking variable energy prices into account in the way that end-users want. People will be able to buy and sell surplus energy from/to other consumers.

Electric cars will change the way we travel, use and store energy. Completely new companies may appear in the electricity market. These may include, for example, special energy service providers to help individuals control their energy use and new kinds of operators to manage future energy grids.

Global trends, such as highly integrated multinational energy grids and investments in green energy, will affect the availability and price of energy. The Intelligent Energy Grids programme aims to integrate VTT’s expertise into different lines of research for the purpose of creating impressive, combined expertise for future smart grid use.
