Filtration techniques

Competence

VTT’s competence in filtration technique covers filter materials, air filters, and air cleaning devices and systems. The research activities include fibrous filtration techniques, electrostatic air cleaning techniques and chemical air cleaning techniques. Special efforts are being made to develop compact air filters and air cleaning devices with high efficiency and low pressure drop. The work is based on sophisticated and flexible measurement techniques which are supported by theoretical knowledge on air filtration and modelling. The experimental techniques have been developed to serve versatile research requirements in the laboratory and field conditions.

Challenges

Many modern high-tech manufacturing processes require a clean production environment which increases the importance of air cleaning techniques. Air cleaning combined with an effective ventilation technique is a key tool for achieving proper cleanliness levels. Besides high-tech manufacturing, air cleaning is gaining increasing importance in other applications as well. The general awareness of the adverse health effects of air impurities is increasing, i.e. fine particles in the ambient air seem to be more dangerous than earlier expected. In addition, the rapid growth of nanotechnology generates new challenges to air cleaning techniques. Better air quality is needed not only in industrial workplaces but also in offices, vehicles, homes etc. Recently, the threats of pandemics and terrorism have increased the importance of air filtration as a part of building protection.

References and merits

VTT’s know-how on filtration has been utilized by several Finnish and foreign companies. These efforts include R&D projects which have resulted award-winning new products. International activities include contributions to European research projects (Airsecure, Cleanrcab), and contract studies for ASHRAE and Nordtest. The studies dealing with filter test methods have been utilized in EN799 filter test standard and recently in ASHRAE Guideline 26-2008.
