Maritime safety and environment

Competence
The emphasis of our research is the improvement of maritime safety, especially in the Baltic. This includes the evaluation of the risks of maritime transport and risk-based safety studies. Telematic maritime systems, the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and ship Automatic Identification System (AIS) and sea routes and ports are parts of our maritime safety research. We also study maritime emissions and other environmental effects and develop environmental technology applicable to maritime use.
Challenges
Maritime traffic in the Baltic has increased during recent years, and is predicted to continue its growth. The increase has been especially great in oil transport. The share of international actors also increases due to globalisation, which leads to decreased knowledge of local circumstances. These changes lead to increased accident risks and environmental effects in maritime transport.
