VTT strives to utilise the enormous biosynthetic capacity of plants for the sustainable production of complex compounds and raw materials. Our research focus spans from bioactive secondary metabolites and recombinant proteins produced in medicinal plants, berries and cereals to the investigation of microalgae for biofuel production. Comprehensive expertise of our experienced staff in the domains of plant biology, chemistry, pharmacy and engineering enables the smooth execution of interdisciplinary projects. Modern tools such as functional genomics, metabolic profiling and their combination supplement our conventional method array. VTT’s state-of-the art technology platforms facilitate plant systems biology and plant biotechnology to the needs of our customers.

   

                      

Challenges

Predictive and rational metabolic engineering of plants and plant cells remains a challenge which affects the wide economical exploitation. However, modern methods allow the industrial application of engineered or native plant cell systems for the contained and sustainable production of diverse high-value compounds used e.g. as pharmaceuticals or novel compounds for drug discovery.
