Vehicle ICT
Competence
VTT has comprehensive knowledge in the area of Vehicle ICT. Our competence covers almost all areas of Vehicle ICT – starting from sensors and sophisticated sensor data processing methods via vehicle bus systems to complex vehicle navigation and guidance solutions. In addition, VTT has strong knowledge of, for example, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) design for vehicle purposes and extensive know-how in how to connect a vehicle as a part of a fleet management system or cooperative traffic system.
In order to conduct high-grade research and development, VTT has also invested in research facilities. VTT Auto ICT laboratory is a mobile and versatile environment for various R&D purposes.
Challenges
Vehicle ICT is a fast growing application area. The vehicle and machine industries use ICT to make vehicles safer, more environmentally friendly and increase the attractiveness of their products. Vehicles are very difficult application environments for ICT. Special requirements are set for hardware solutions in terms of, for example, durability, reliability and cost effectiveness. Embedded software solutions must be efficient and carefully tested because they can easily affect the safety of the vehicle.
Solutions
-
improving the safety of crossings using sensor fusion and complex data
processing
-
various types of driver support systems, e.g. vehicle navigation systems
-
special sensor solutions (e.g. MEMS)
-
energy harvesting in the automotive environment
Benefits
Vehicle ICT solutions can be used, for example, to increase the safety of the vehicle. Very often, our customers utilize ICT to build new, partially automated features for their systems. Combined with various communication solutions (e.g. V2V, V2R, etc.) large and efficient traffic and transportation systems can be realized.
References and merits
VTT has conducted long term co-operation with European vehicle manufacturers and their subcontractors and other companies.
