Wireless sensor networks and embedded devices respond to industry´s needs

We are using a range of wireless technologies to replace clumsy machine cabling and provide substantial savings for our customers.

VTT has decades of research experience in wireless sensor networks, while our experts are in active collaboration with leading machinery manufacturers. We are developing energy-autonomous embedded systems with wireless data measurement and selection, to relieve our customers of the need to change batteries or install awkward signal and voltage cabling that will require maintenance.

It is now easier than ever to equip machinery with independent, energy-autonomous sensors and actuators that help to automate machinery cycles and reduce energy consumption. One example is our VTT Node measurement module that we have developed as a sensor platform: minute and with negligible consumption, the module harvests its energy from sources such as light, vibration or electric and magnetic fields.

Our Tekes-funded research project VAMMA targeted to use wireless sensor networks in the internal condition monitoring of mining industry process heap. As well as achieving process optimisation, the solution – whose functionality we also demonstrated in practice – enables continuous monitoring of essential variables that have previously been extremely difficult to measure.

Ultra Wide Band technology offers trouble-free and rapid data transfer and positioning

Our research over the past five years has led to successful customisation of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radio technology for industrial use. Energy efficient UWB neither disrupts nor is disrupted by traditional radio communications. Apart from UWB, we are also conversant with short- and medium-range technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee and radio operating on 868 MHz.

We make use of radio-frequency identification (RFID), for example in access control. With near field communication (NFC) technology, public transport users can employ the contactless identification function for fast operation of a mobile service, or to check the timetable for their stop in real time, or even to order a mobile ticket.

We specialise in wireless systems in machine environments

VTT is part of FIMECC Ltd's national Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation, and a partner among others in the InterSync and EFFIMA projects. We are also involved in creating a wireless district heating network and energy autonomous condition monitoring under the EU's Eurostars project PRESTEGE.

Although our customers are mainly manufacturers producing machinery for the mining and metal industries, the technologies we use have other potential applications, for example in health care and sport.
