Technology and innovation strategy

VTT focuses its research spearheads on specific areas, which will be undergoing major business transitions or radical technology changes. In selected strategic areas, VTT is at the cutting edge of research internationally.

In order to increase its positive impact, VTT has concentrated around half of its strategic research into spearhead and major innovation programmes. These programmes exploit VTT’s multidisciplinary and multitechnological competences. Business plans are prepared for these spearhead programmes. Thus, the innovation pursuing nature and applicability of results will be ensured.

In its operational mode, VTT continues on its chosen path, transforming itself from a technology developer to an authentic innovation developer. VTT's research programmes consist of concurrent, adjacent, and interactive projects involving the development of technologies, applications, and business models. In this way, we accelerate the process of creating business from technology for our customers. VTT has at its disposal several high-level international networks, which are invested in and developed continuously.

VTT participates in research consortium programmes in selected focus areas derived from its strategy. In the intensive networks of these programmes, research results for our customers’ innovations are being created. The most central programmes are EU framework programmes, in addition to Tekes, SHOK (Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation in Finland), and industrial alliances’ programmes.

VTT’s research vision is directed by two major trends: digitalisation and sustainable development. Information digitalisation guides not only information and communication technology, but also the development of all its application areas. Sustainable development, on the other hand, requires taking environmental aspects into account in products and services as well as production processes.
