Biotechnology for process industry

VTT develops sustainable industrial solutions for the production of chemicals, polymers, fuels, proteins, bioactive compounds and natural fibre-based products from renewable raw materials. VTT’s expertise in industrial biotechnology covers the entire value chain from raw materials to products. In addition, a broader set of in-house technologies, e.g. chemical and physical technologies, can be combined with biotechnological processes. We provide services for all the important stages of the innovation process from technology and market foresight to the up-scaling of bio-production and commercialisation.

Our expertise includes the following key areas:

  • design and production of performance enzymes
  • metabolic pathway engineering
  • various production systems and novel process concepts for bioprocesses
  • fibre, biopolymer and biomaterial processing
  • nature-inspired nanomaterials
  • bio-based intelligence solutions for sensors, indicators, green electronics and printed biocatalysts

Our targets are typically new value-added products and process innovations. Our pilot facilities offer custom manufacture and the possibility to up-scale bioprocesses before entering a demonstration or industrial scale. VTT Culture Collection maintains microbial strains and provides a valuable biodiversity for various applications. We are constantly looking for new ways to combine various expertise at VTT in novel and innovative ways for the benefit of our customers. Applications of industrial biotechnology are developed together with clients for various sectors. Leading companies in the biotechnology, food, pharmaceutical, pulp & paper, energy, and chemical sectors are among our customers and collaborators.
