VTT’s research expertise covers the entire barley-malt-beer chain from field to consumer. Our services cover all the important stages of the innovation process from technology and market foresight to commercialisation.

Our research activities include:

  • monitoring and controlling microbes in malting and brewing
  • fungal hydrophobins and gushing
  • side-stream valorisation
  • yeast physiology and strain improvement
  • improvements in process hygiene
  • functional beverages

Our targets are typically new products and process innovations. Our pilot facilities offer a checkpoint prior to industrial applications.

VTT’s Culture Collection maintains a large collection of microbial strains which can be delivered for various applications.

Membership in the Nutritech Industrial Platform helps our customers in keeping well-informed about activities in the field of nutrition and well-being.

We are constantly looking for new ways of applying our know-how to benefit the malting and brewing sector. Currently we are combining IT, electronics and printing technologies to create entirely new opportunities for printed smart products for packaging. New innovations are also expected in the field of nanotechnology.
