Pilot plants for bio- and chemical processes

Competence

VTT can provide a versatile set of pilot scale facilities for chemical and biochemical products and processes, such as chemical and polymer synthesis, as well as fermentation, food processing, and separation and drying operations. We can serve many types of customers from large international food or chemical companies to small local biotechnology start-up enterprises. In addition, we cooperate in many international research networks and projects.

Although very versatile tasks can be performed at our pilot plants, the units have been profiled as one of the leading facilities for research and scale-up of biomass-based materials and chemicals. We can, for example, cover the whole chain of the modern biorefinery concept: from biomass fractionations, separations and purifications to chemical or biotechnical methods to produce value-added products.

The pilot facilities are well equipped for process scale-up. In addition to smaller equipment suitable for research purposes, the pilot plants have relatively large reactor capacities, up to 2 m3 and effective downstream processing units, providing the possibility for pre-commercial scale custom production.

VTT pilot facilities consist of three somewhat specialised pilot scale units. One unit has been designed mainly for chemical and polymer synthesis and versatile separations . The two other parts of our facilities have been designed mainly for biotechnical and food research processes, with well equipped pilot for fermentation and downstream processing and a pilot units for food bioprocessing. All these pilot facilities operate under the same coordination, and competences and resources can easily be combined for the benefit of our customers. In addition, the research teams can rely on scientific support from the leading researchers in the relevant technology areas of VTT.
