Energy efficiency

VTT develops and offers services and solutions for the development of energy efficient buildings, communities, processes and road traffic. In addition to energy savings, these solutions and services aim at mitigating climate change and reducing its impacts.

VTT’s solutions, ranging from urban planning to operational functionality of buildings and communities, enable the comprehensive assessment and development of both buildings and communities.

VTT’s Finnish High-Tech Ecocity™ concept has been developed as a development tool for entire communities. The concept enables the development of individual and energy efficient solutions that fit the needs of different communities.

VTT’s energy efficient comprehensive solutions for communities are based on well-functioning areal, structural and spatial solutions, which ensures good lifespan economy.

VTT is continually developing new process solutions and product concepts that generate added value for energy-intensive industry and reduce the environmental footprint.

Targets of research and development include the improvement of the efficiency of fibre manufacturing processes of the forest industry, reduction of electricity and steam consumption in paper manufacturing processes and enhancement of energy recovery from side streams.

Further goals include the generation of added value in the refinement processes of raw material streams, production of new raw material fractions for the manufacture of various biofuels and biochemicals and avoidance of the use of round wood for energy production. The use of field biomass in the integrated production of fibre and energy is also being investigated.

The road traffic sector must reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and increase the use of renewable energy significantly by 2020. The achievement of the set goals will require technical development work, demonstration of new technologies and bringing to market of industry-best solutions by means of suitable promotion.

VTT’s TransEco programme focuses on the comprehensive examination and development of solutions aimed at reducing the energy consumption and emissions of road traffic as well as operating models suitable for Finland.  The programme is based on four pillars: research, demonstrations, decision-making and policies, and consumer control.

VTT is extremely well prepared to examine the use of energy in road traffic. VTT has access to research facilities suitable for both passenger cars and heavy vehicles. VTT supports various actors in the traffic sector by offering them, among other things, implementation and management services for demonstration projects involving biofuels and new vehicle technology. As regards heavy vehicles, VTT’s development and research of energy-saving methods and technologies has drawn international attention. VTT’s other activities in the field include participation in the development of hybrid bus technology. VTT’s own research equipment also includes plug-in hybrid cars, the batteries of which can be recharged by plugging them in to a standard electrical outlet.
