Advanced materials and coatings for new and renewable energy technologies

Sustainable power generation is needed for the mitigation of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Energy storage and smart grids are needed for wide spread utilization of intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) could be used to limit the climatic impact of continued use of fossil fuels. Biofuels and hydrogen should be produced for sustainable transportation.

Advanced materials and coatings are facilitating efficiency and durability improvements in all these new energy conversion, storage, distribution and end use technologies. Among others, advanced materials include:

  • Tailored materials and coatings for oxyfuel and biomass oxyfuel combustion and gasification.
  • Catalyst materials for biomass gasification, gas cleaning and fuel cells.
  • Nano materials for batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors and thermoelectrics.
  • Lightweight composites and structures for wind turbines, flywheels and gas storage.
  • Electrically or thermally conducting or insulating polymers.
  • Functional coatings for solar energy conversion and hydrogen technologies.
  • Phase change materials for thermal energy storage
