Coating and surface development
We offer our customers solutions when it comes to applying understanding on interactions between base paper and coating colour, coating colour consolidation and related print quality. Our expertise in materials and processes, as well as applying new technology in innovative products and applications, enhances the competitive edge for our customers, while the integration of competencies enables new product concepts.
VTT provides unique facilities and tools for coating research. Our new coating testing line discards the idea of a fixed process completely; its single components can be connected just as desired in order to verify your new ideas and concepts. An example of our semi-pilot tools is a curtain coating stability tester which can be used to test new recipes, multilayer compatibility or to determine optimal surfactant levels in coating colours. Another example is SAUKKO device, which we use to help customers study immobilization and dynamic water retention of coating colours in detail at real coater speeds. This can be utilized e.g. to solve coating runnability problems at coaters.
VTT’s special expertise is in using biopolymers in the coating of fibre-based materials. Various intelligent functionalities can also be incorporated on the print substrate or in the paper structure by means of printing or coating methods. These functionalities can be, e.g., electrical, chemical, or biosensing functionalities. VTT has a new unique roll–to roll pilot coating research environment for development and testing of novel coating and printing solutions.
In coating research we are focusing on novel methods and material applications. Our special expertise is in using biopolymers for paper surface modification. Biopolymers can be formulated into glues, coatings and pigments. We also offer expert services on the synthesis of specialty polymers. Intelligent (electrical, chemical or biochemical) functionalities can be incorporated into material by coating or printing. Functional surfaces have boundless potential applications, such as anti-counterfeit and brand enhancement applications or freshness indicators.
