VTT has excellent experimental facilities for papermaking research from laboratory to pilot scale. This offers us the unique possibility to develop new technologies from fibre scale phenomena all the way to optimal production conditions. We have strong expertise in chemical and mechanical fibre processing, furnish component mixes, web forming, process chemistry, drainage, runnability and drying issues in papermaking. We have also strong know-how in fibre properties and paper physics as well as separation / fractionation technologies. When you need new and innovative process solutions from wet end to drying our modular platforms and expertise make it possible.
Production efficiency is strongly affected by web runnability. VTT has world leading competence in paper physics and we can utilize it to solve your runnability problems. By combining our knowledge of materials and related unit processes with paper physics and our testing and simulation tools we surely can find the solution for you. The solution might be for example the choice of right kind of fibres with optimum furnishes or an improved way of running the paper making unit processes.
For paper machine runnability, control of microbiology is an increasingly important factor. VTT’s expertise and tools in this area can help you to build up an efficient and cost-effective control program to ensure successful papermaking process and high quality of the end product. Our laboratory and pilot scale facilities form a flexible platform to evaluate the potential of novel approaches. We can also assist you to solve any problems related to microbial activity or biocide performance at the mill.
We provide process analysis, chemical audits and troubleshooting services to paper and pulp mills. To solve different challenges at the mills, we use state-of-the art on-line measurement devices and data analysis methods or lighter methods when applicable. We have tackled issues like deposits, chemical and physical process variations, web breaks and poor MD and CD profiles hundreds of times in many different mills.
Biotechnology provides new opportunities to effectively enhance the pulp and papermaking processes. The variety of enzyme applications has expanded from bleaching to control of disturbing compounds; fibre modification and enhancement of pulp refining and dewatering. Enzymatic fibre modifications also enable tailoring of pulps for different end uses and development of novel properties. We offer a unique combination of versatile laboratory and pilot scale services and facilities, consultancy and strong competence in enzyme applications.
