Auto ICT laboratory

Vehicle ICT is one of the key competence areas at VTT. VTT’s internal expert network for Vehicle ICT expertise consists of about 100 highly-skilled experts who have considerable experience in the development of various vehicle-related systems.

Auto-ICT laboratory is a mobile laboratory entity which has been designed to support high-grade research and development activities. The laboratory consists of several parts which can be utilized either as separate units or as an interoperable system.

The heart of the Auto-ICT laboratory is the BMW 525d Touring passenger car, which has been equipped with an extensive set of factory-fitted optional equipment, such as sophisticated active cruise control with stop&go function, a head-up display, a lane departure warning system, etc. VTT has installed a professional special sensor system for research and development purposes, including laser scanners, thermal camera, radar, high-resolution positioning system and three high performance mobile computers with accurate data collection and processing software.

Another research vehicle is the VW Golf, which has been equipped with a hidden embedded driver monitoring system. This system can be used to record the driver’s actions for further analysis.

For cooperative traffic solution and telematics service development, VTT has built a server system which can be used to communicate with test vehicles.

For special research and development purposes, Auto-ICT laboratory has a movable traffic monitoring system. This monitoring system has been developed in the European project “ASSET” together with EmTele and the Finnish Traffic Police.

These facilities have been utilized in several research projects with good results
