VTT’s Interaction laboratory can be fitted for different purposes when studying and developing multimodal and multi-device user interfaces. It also supports development and research of proofs of concept for smart environment solutions.
There are various big screen options in use, including a movable rear projection screen and 42" LCD displays. Light and sound effects can be used to intensify immersion effects and to give feedback to the user. The laboratory can be observed from an observation room. The activities can be recorded with four networked digital cameras.
The laboratory is equipped with modular and movable pressure-sensitive floor tiles. Tiles can help identify the position, movements or gestures of a single person or a group. Furthermore, the studio has a sensor data acquisition system with various sensor options, e.g. temperature, weight, proximity, light, orientation, etc. By combining the floor tile system, displays, mobile devices, sound and light peripherals and sensor and actuators, different kinds of novel and innovative multimodal and multi-device solutions can be created.
To do all this VTT has developed easy-to-use multi-device UI development environment and tools. With these platforms and tools, applications will be fast and easy to develop with minimal, or even no, programming skills. It will also be easy to implement, test, and evaluate a variety of user interface and application ideas for smart spaces.
