VTT is a strong contributor to recent developments in eHealth, the application of ICT for healthcare delivery and personal health management. The provision of useful, user-friendly and secure electronic services for citizens is predicated on the interoperability of different systems. VTT pursues an interoperability mandate by leveraging international standards and best practices for innovative service prototypes.
Mobile phones provide a promising platform for personalized health and well-being management services. Using these generic devices as a platform would allow the integration of behaviour change support into everyday situations. Mobile devices can also unobtrusively monitor users’ actions, and the resulting information can be used to facilitate behaviour self-monitoring, and to provide timely guidance and intervention.
VTT joins forces with health service providers to apply science and technology to real life processes. A good example of such co-operation is the recently launched self-care model in Sipoo Health Centre, Finland.
The self-care model is built on a mobile self-care management system provided by VTT and partner companies. It allows patients to access their medical records, upload health measurement results from home, and get supportive feedback. VTT’s contribution consists of the development of an easy-to-use mobile application with decision support capability, as well as leading the clinical trial for evaluating the new self-care model.
mHealth: a mobile health software development platform
VTT’s mobile health platform is used to generate cost-efficient mobile health implementations tailored to specific health consumer needs. It can monitor nutrition, exercise, mental wellbeing, weight management and social activity. It also contains algorithms that combine information in order to provide feedback and guidance on general health and wellbeing.
