Satellite image-based remote sensing
In the field of remote sensing of the natural environment, we develop advanced image interpretation methods to retrieve information from digital satellite images. Our special fields of expertise are remote sensing of the natural environment, particularly forestry applications and sea ice monitoring . Using this technology, we have developed solutions to reduce emissions in the forest sector; and to reduce ship fuel consumption by combining ship and terrestrial radar imagery with satellite radar images.
Participatory sensing: crowd-sourced observation
Participatory sensing refers to a whole range of activities that use people to collect information about the environment. VTT has developed a participatory sensing tool that enables people to report environmental observations with a mobile phone. To date, the tool has been utilized for air and water quality, plant disease, and forest biomass monitoring.
Ice navigation: better route planning
VTT has developed tools that facilitate route planning for ships traversing ice and for the icebreakers that accompany them. These tools deliver and present near real-time environmental information based on satellite images, ice charts, radar images, ice forecasts, weather data and traffic information. Ships receive route planning information over a low-bandwidth mobile communication link.
Environmental information systems (EIS) for more informed decision making
Based on our research on EIS architectures, VTT is developing an environmental information marketplace (Envitori), enabling citizens as well as private and public institutions to share environmental information for better, more environmentally sustainable decision making.
