Challenges in next generation wireless and mobile communication systems

Some of the challenges of next generation wireless and mobile communication systems include the need for increased performance, usability, autonomy, security, and embedded low cost solutions. It is also essential to improve resource efficiency, particularly, but not limited to, the areas of spectral and energy efficiency.

High-performance, cost-efficient wireless networks and terminals

VTT has extensive experience in the research, evaluation, development and prototyping of adaptive multi-carrier techniques for use in wide area, metropolitan area, and short-range applications. These include orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA).

We also have strong development experience in the following technologies:

  • configurable multiple input multiple output (MIMO) processing
  • ultra wideband (UWB) transmission methods, modelling and pre-distortion of nonlinearities
  • joint optimisation of capacity, coverage and quality, cross-layer design and adaptive transmission
  • dynamic spectrum management
  • advanced networking concepts; mesh, grids, relays, co-operating and cognitive access networks and terminals.

3G, 3G+, 4G and WiMAX

VTT has played a leadership role in developing methods, transceiver concepts and prototyping for 3G, 3G+/LTE and 4G mobile communication systems. We have also been involved in the development and prototyping of transceiver concepts for WiMAX radios and networks.

Our expertise also includes the following:

  • transceiver concepts and digital signal processing algorithms for microwave radios
  • transceiver concepts and digital signal processing algorithms for high speed (2 Gbit/s) short-range UWB radios.
  • Multicore processing is required in order to create the aforementioned radio systems. We have the expertise to design, implement as well as simulate multicore processing functionality.

Our modelling and simulation research environments include:

  • Matlab, CCSS, OPNET
  • Telelogic UML environment
  • SystemC design environment for performance and system modelling
  • Coware ESL toolset: LisaTEK for processor modelling, platform architecture for SoC modelling, virtual platform creator for early SW development.
