Low cost sensors for consumer electronics

The user appeal of many electronic consumer products such as smartphones depends to a large extent on the sensor solutions used, for example, in the user interface.

Some of the high performance sensors that VTT has developed for mobile devices include microelectromechanical system (MEMS) microphones, an electric compass based on MEMS technology, and MEMS-based altimeters. We have also engineered unique technology for some components such as timing circuits using MEMS resonators.

High performance sensors for industrial applications

Silicon technologies offer the reliability and performance metrics required in industrial sensors while still keeping costs affordable. VTT has developed unique miniaturized spectrometers based on a proprietary MEMS technology. Other product prototypes include gas sensors for leak detection and an acoustic emissions sensor to monitor the condition
of industrial machines.

Radio-frequency front-end technologies and solutions

VTT provides technologies and solutions for tunable and reconfigurable radio front ends to enable energy-efficient wide-band or multi-band communication. 3D packaging and component technologies are used to realize miniaturized module solutions by means of an optimized antenna coupling.

Radiation detectors for imaging applications

VTT offers solutions and production services for state-of-the-art edgeless pixel detector assemblies. These assemblies are required in high-energy physics, X-ray and electron crystallography, medical imaging, and non-destructive testing. Our services include silicon detectors processing and assembly of gallium arsenide (GaAs), cadmium zinc telluride (Cd(Zn)Te), and silicon hybrid detectors.

Customized services in microsystem technologies

Successful microsystem products can be created using various customized services by VTT. Unique devices can be designed and unique manufacturing processes can be created in response to the customer requests. After the R&D phase, customer-specific production services can be obtained by VTT Memsfab, or the technology can be transferred to the fab chosen by the customer.

Tunnel junction and superconducting devices

Several of the most high-performance measuring instruments are based on super-
conducting devices such as SQUID magnetometers or superconducting voltage references. VTT has 30 years of experience in the field of superconducting tunnel-junction devices. Access to contract manufacturing services based on the VTT technology can be arranged through VTT Memsfab.
