Oled and photovoltaics

For over ten years, VTT has developed a large-area roll-to-roll (R2R) wet deposition process based primarily on printing techniques for printed OLED and OPV devices.

As a global leader, VTT’s strengths include:

  1. extensive know-how in materials formulation and the development of different printing processes
  2. vast experience with different OLED and OPV device structures
  3. knowledge of different R2R processes, including printing, etching and resist patterning techniques, lamination, laser processing, electrical sintering, and thermal nanoimprinting, among others.

VTT work reflects best practices from all three of these areas and, combined together, they allow VTT to offer top-notch products and strong application know-how. Perhaps most importantly, we can use our capabilities to help customers find effective solutions for their specific technology challenges and application development projects.

Material formulation

When combined with a deep understanding of multiple printing processes and device architectures, VTT’s solid knowledge of chemistry allows us to offer an effective material development chain for various organic and inorganic materials required by OLED and OPV applications.

For example, we have developed a low-work-function conductive aluminium ink that permits a tailored approach to structuring specifications, leading to more efficient printed devices.

Together with our research partners, we have also developed a unique R2R inert gas printing machine that enables the processing of air-sensitive materials. The inert gas conditions also allow for R2R processing experiments.

OLED and OPV device processing

VTT takes a systematic approach to developing R2R processing facilities for OLED and OPV device processing. We actively collaborate with world-leading barrier-film developers in order to ensure the highest quality barriers available for R2R processing.

OLEDs for large area signage and displays

VTT’s OLED developments are focused on large area signage and displays that require special functionalities for differentiation, authentication, anti-tampering, and communication. In the autumn of 2007, VTT demonstrated the R2R printed two-colour OLED element for product package applications. Today we are developing highly visible and attractive anti-tampering features for smart packaging, visible and interactive branding for smart tags, authentication, and smart card user interfaces.

OPVs for large area applications

VTT’s large area organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications focus on a variety of charging devices for low power applications, reflective poster displays, indoor energy harvesting, and building-integrated PV. Using 1st generation commercial OPV materials, VTT can manufacture OPV modules with 3% photon conversion efficiency on surface areas covering tens of square metres. VTT is currently developing R2R processes for higher performance OPV systems by utilizing novel low band-gap materials and multi-junction device architectures.
