Sustainability is increasingly becoming a key driver of competitiveness at a global, national, industry and firm level. Sustainability issues have to be incorporated into the firm`s strategy and decision-making. New concepts and business models are needed to facilitate the implementation of sustainable strategies.

Objective

The objective of the project is to increase understanding about how to build sustainability in business models. The aim is to identify new exceptional business models, and to challenge current way of thinking. This project focuses mainly on the interplay between ecological and economic sustainability while not compromising social sustainability. The far-reaching goal is to support sustainability-driven competitiveness of the firms in the future.

Work plan

The project creates understanding and knowledge about the sustainable business model and the mechanisms through which ecological and economical values co-influence on the sustainable competitiveness of a firm. Based on the comprehensive overview of the literature and theoretical understanding the purpose is to develop tools for analyzing current business models and identifying new business opportunities. Tools will be tested with firms in cooperation using participative and innovative methods.

Results

With developed frameworks and tools firms are capable to understand the mechanisms through which sustainable competitiveness can be achieved. Firms are able to identify new exceptional business models and to build competitiveness in business models through sustainability.

Project consortium

Sustainable Business Models project is a part of DemaNET project (Dematerialization and Sustainable Competitiveness through New Models for Industrial Networking). DemaNET is a two and half -year (2012-2014) research project funded by the Tekes Green Growth technology programme. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Lappeenranta University of Technology, University of Jyväskylä, and VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland).
