Bioeconomy Summit 2014

Bioeconomy Summit 2014 in Helsinki gathered together decision-makers, scientists and representatives from different kind of companies interested in unleaching the potential of bio-based business in Finland. Even a salesman from the future came to greet the audience and make fun of our old-fashioned laptops (we did not expect that to happen).

The first key note speaker of the Summit was Erkki Liikanen, Governor of the Bank of Finland and a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB), Bank of Finland. As Mr Liikanen stated, to overcome the challenges in the Finnish economy we must not only make more soup, we must also come up with new recipes! Roel P.J. Bol, Special Envoy of the Green Growth of the ministry of Economic Affair in the Netherlands, presented his key note speech on biobased economy in the Netherlands. Roel Bol inspired the audience by describing the implementation of a systemic approach in the Netherlands and emphasised the meaning of focus. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action presented her greetings to the audience via video depicting the potential and challenges in bioeconomy for Europe.

The Summit continued with presentations from the representatives of the industry and was finished by scientists and experts working in different research organizations. It can be concluded from the presentations and what was said during the event, that we have what a successful bioeconomy requires: personal commitment, a bit of madness and plenty of top R&D!

The event was hosted by VTT and moderated by André Noël Chaker. André, your hosting was great fun to watch, you even got us singing “we are the champions”!
