CLASS - Climate Adaptive Surfaces
This project develops surfacing materials to mitigate impacts of climate change in urban environments. The new materials are surfacing layers of permeable concrete, asphalt and stone together with sub-base structures of aggregate, pipes, geotextiles and water storage tanks.
The system is optimized during design, construction and maintenance, allowing high filtration of water to the substrate rather than burdening stormwater collection systems or transporting run-off pollutants to local water bodies. Structures are optimized for Nordic environments, while addressing water chemistry and vegetation interactions. Computer flood simulations are combined with climate forecasting to evaluate impacts, while structural dimensioning improves stormwater design tools.
