The Institute for Systems Biology SPb is SME which has been established in
2004. Basic activities of ISBSPb are scientific research in areas of Systems
Biology and Bioinformatics and scientific programming with focus on
quantitative description of biological processes and their application to
biotechnology and biomedicine.
All personnel of ISBSPb are highly experienced in development of kinetic
models based on all possible experimental data available and reconstruction of
dynamic and regulatory behavior of the biochemical systems from both bacteria
(E.coli, M.tuberculosis, S.pneumoniae) and eukaryotes (yeast, hepatocyte,
platelet, endothelium cell, cardiomyocyte, osteoblast, osteoclast). Kinetic
models of most of the metabolic pathways of central E.coli metabolism have
been developed including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, Krebs cycle, glyoxilate
shunt, pentose phosphate pathway, pathways of amino acids and nucleotide
biosynthesis. Signaling pathways initiated by epidermal growth factor,
parathyroid hormone, prostaglandins, tumor necrosis factor etc. in hepatocyte,
platelet, endothelium cell, osteoblast and osteoclast have been reconstructed
and modelled. Mathematical models of gene regulatory pathways in both bacteria
(E.coli central catabolism, purine biosynthesis etc) and mammals (NFkB
regulated gene expression etc.) have been built and studied. Kinetic models of
organelles (mitochondria, chloroplasts) describing their bioenergetics have
been constructed and verified against available experimental data. These
models have been applied to resolve different problems arising in areas of
biotechnology (strain improvements, optimization of biotechnological
processes) and biomedicine (drug discovery, drug safety, drug development).
