OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Our major objective is to contribute to the harnessing of knowledge and creativity, both indegenious, as well as scientific and technological knowledge, to the benefit of the underprivileged and poor people of the world. The concrete goal of our research and consulting work is to create susceptibe social, economic and cultural environment for innovation that addresses effectively the immediate and long-term challenges of developing countries.

We believe that innovation levels development only when it is appropriately embedded in society’s culture. Our approach mixes sensitivity to the uniqueness of local innovation systems, as well as proven knowledge of best and benchmarked innovation and information society practices globally.

Our team consists of people with solid background in Finnish, European, North American, and African and Brazilian innovation systems and societies.

Our major focus is research addressing new developments in innovation systems and information society. In addition, we do considerable amount of consulting and contract research. Development cooperation, especially under the aegis of Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, is an expanding area of activity. Support and consultation to companies and the private sector is also expanding. Picture below demonstrates our major activity areas.

We carry out high-quality academic research on innovation and information society in the context of development, and offer also broad range of support services for improving and building innovation systems and information society.

Public-private approaches in fostering innovation in developing countries;

New innovation models and practices, especially pro-poor innovation modes:

We offer broad range of services for organizations advancing science, technology and innovation systems, as well as information society. Our main activities include:

• Support and capacity building to innovation and information society systems;

o Strategy, programme, and organizational development, especially:

o National and regional STI / ICT and Information Society strategies and strategy processes;

o Development cooperation programme development, appraisal and implementation;

o Technology and innovation roadmapping and foresight;

Impact assessment and evaluation, especially:

o ICT and information society indicators;

o STI-indicators;

o Innovation systems and STI-programme-evaluation;

o Impact assessment frameworks;

TEAM AND EXPERTISE

Our core services and research is provided from the innovation studies group within the Organizations, networks and innovation systems knowledge center in VTT. Our people have advanced degrees in social sciences, economics and have extensive experience in providing broad range of services for innovation and information society decision makers in government, research institutes, private sector and other stake-holder sectors.

In addition to our key competences in innovation systems and information society, we collaborate closely with the technological experts in other sectors of VTT. Drawing on cutting-edge expertise of over 2000 people, we have ready teams of people, often with working experience from developing countries, in ICT, energy or construction.
