Dr. Antti Vasara is the President & CEO of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd since November 1, 2015. Antti is a technology industry executive with close to 20 years of P&L and general management experience from international companies as well as board of director experience from several public and private companies in Finland, Canada and the UK.
He is a non-executive director and member of the board of Comptel Oyj in Finland and Nexeon Ltd in the UK. Previously, he has been serving several years as a board member of F-Secure Oyj in Finland and 724 Solutions in Canada, as well as a supervisory board member of Symbian Plc in the UK. He also was Chairman of the Research and Technology Committee of the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) as well as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes).
Prior to joining VTT, he was EVP of R&D services business area at Tieto Corporation. He worked for 9 years at Nokia in various P&L and product responsible roles leading business units, R&D units, sales & marketing units as well as Nokia’s corporate strategy. Before Nokia, he was the CEO of SmartTrust Ltd, a leading provider of service management software to mobile operators. Before joining SmartTrust in 2000, Mr. Vasara worked as Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company in Finland consulting mainly in the fields of telecommunications, electronics and pharmaceutical & biotechnology with projects in Nordic countries, Central Europe, UK, USA and Asia-Pacific. Earlier in his career, Mr. Vasara was a researcher in the field of optical communications at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland and holds one international patent.
Mr. Vasara holds a Doctor of Technology (Technical Physics) degree from Helsinki University of Technology in Finland.
Margaret Stack’s research interests are focused on the interactions of solid particle erosion and wear of materials in corrosive environments, with specific emphasis on the development of mapping techniques for understanding the mechanisms of materials loss. These include oil & gas, bio-medical and marine renewable fields. She is the author/co-author of over 180 publications in this area (120 journal articles). She heads up the Tribology Research Group in the University of Strathclyde and is PI of the EPSRC funded ReC-ASM project which aims to optimize materials in marine and tidal energy conversion. She leads the International Network on Tribo-Corrosion (TrICorr-Net), sits on several editorial boards including Tribology International and is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Bio- and Tribo-Corrosion (Springer).
Maria Isabel De Barros Bouchet
Maria Isabel De Barros Bouchet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Science and Technology of Materials and Surfaces in the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. Her research activity in the Laboratory of Tribology and System Dynamics since 2001 mainly concerns the understanding of tribochemical reactions of lubrication additives using simulation by Gas Phase Lubrication (GPL), and specially the lubrication of carbon-based coatings with green additives and superlubricity mechanisms.
Before her chair, she has made her PhD. on the PACVD deposition and characterization of diamond coatings for mechanical applications. Currently, her technological interests are in the synthesis and characterization of novel carbon materials for mechanical applications. Fundamentally, she is interested in understanding the role of structure and surface chemistry of carbon coatings on reactivity with the lubrication additives molecules used in lubricants and fuels. Her research presently includes investigation of the structure, mechanical and tribological properties of carbon coatings (DLC and diamond), and deposition processes of carbon thin films. She has over 55 publications with numerous citations (h-index 18) on these topics and has collaborated to the redaction of 3 books. Her work is at the origin of various patents on those topics and numerous international invited talks.
She has served on Scientific Committee and chaired sessions for international conferences. Most recently, she serves on Scientific Committee of the second International Tribology Conference in Brazil, TriboBr-2014 and she was the vice-chairwomen of the last joint event Tribo-Lyon congress 2013.
Principal Investigator for multiscale materials modeling at VTT Materials and Manufacturing. Has over 17 years of research experience in development and application of multiscale materials modelling solutions, integrated computational materials engineering and software toolsets. Has more than 70 peer reviewed publications. Development lead for VTT in-house multiscale modeling solution, VTT ProperTune as well as project lead for the national multiscale materials modeling effort of Finland. Research interests: Multiscale modelling and integrated computational materials engineering, interface problems in hard materials, crystal plasticity and dislocation dynamics, multiscale modelling of additive manufacturing products and processes.
Patrick De Baets
has 20 years of academic experience in the field of machine elements and tribology. His research is focusing on the tribological response (friction, friction stability and wear) in dry or marginally lubricated conditions of advanced materials such as fibre-reinforced composites, high temperature ceramics and various self-lubricating materials. For his research, he has constructed different experimental tribological set-ups, up to MN force range. Advanced wear monitoring technology, i.a. image based technology, has been developed for enhanced wear observation. He leads an experimental tribology research group of currently 6 Ph.D. students and 2 post-docs, and is director of Soete Laboratory, Ghent University, where about 50 people are working on fracture mechanics, fatigue and tribology. He is teaching specialized courses on Machine Design, Machine Elements and Tribology for Bachelor and Master students in Mechanical Engineering. He also has gained 15 years’ experience in teaching general course on mechanical engineering to non-technical audience.
