Tribotronics is “the active control of tribological elements”. Active control includes manipulation of electronic and mechanical components as well as control of the physical and chemical behavior of fluids and materials which may have a function at an interface. A small number of active tribological systems are under development. However, with rapid developments in micro actuators, sensors, miniature power units, wireless transfer and the internet of things, interest in these systems is increasing rapidly as applications in maintenance and improved functionality become evident.
This session will begin with a short presentation on the development of tribotronics from Prof Ian Sherrington and will be followed by an open discussion on the topic.
