VTT's idea movement to accelerate new mobile services

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland challenged the whole Finnish nation to participate in innovation in order to collect 35,000 new mobile applications that facilitate day-to-day living. All ideas have been published for free use for companies and individuals at www.vtt.fi/idealiike.

VTT sees mobile systems and services based on wireless data transfer as crucially important for the functioning of society. The campaign wishes to pay particular attention to innovation expertise that is a lifeline for maintaining industrial vitality and welfare.

From innovations to concrete projects

In order to be successful, countries and EU need the development of new ideas into innovations, which means refining new ideas and developing them into products and services that can be employed commercially. The discussion concerning innovation environments and systems must change into concrete projects, which can be used to activate innovation operations at all levels of society.

All of us have probably experienced some situation or service in which a suitable mobile phone application would have made the situation or service simpler and more rewarding. The best way to create anthropocentric technology and understand consumers’ current or future needs is to obtain the stimulus for new applications from consumers themselves – this is exactly what the idea movement is based on.

The aim of the road show, visiting the largest cities in Finland during one month’s period, was to concretely activate the innovation expertise in our country, find creative solutions to situations in day-to-day living and develop new business opportunities for the technology industry.

Free use of ideas facilitates commercialisation

What makes the campaign unique is that all ideas will be published for free use according to the Open Innovation principle.

When every company, organisation and private individual has mobile ideas originating in the practical needs of thousands of people at their disposal, the further development of new products to be commercialised will be considerably facilitated.

VTT's partners in the project were the Helsinki School of Economics, the Tampere University of Technology and the Universities of Oulu, Jyväskylä and Lapland.
