Climate change and the role of energy consumption in this development are widely debated topics. The Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) will publish its fourth Assessment Report later this year. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland's expertise carries out makes an important contribution to the work of IPCC. VTT has participated in preparing the draft of the section ‘Mitigation of Climate Change' for the report.
According to VTT, utilisation of peatland in energy production causes lower greenhouse gas emissions than the use of coal, providing the area is subsequently used for long-term production of renewable energy after peat production. Utilising new technologies is another important way of reducing the greenhouse impact of peat. Thanks to their improved efficiency, new peat production methods were found to reduce the emissions of the production chain. VTT investigated the greenhouse impact of peatland utilisation from the land use point of view.
VTT is developing a traffic and road toll monitoring system based on long-range RFID remote identification technology in China. The new system could become the foundation for nation-wide traffic and road toll monitoring. The new technology will be soon deployed in a city with a population of 7 million. Readers will be installed on each of the city's bridges during this year. The goal is to eventually expand the RFID reading system to cover the entire city and use it for traffic control purposes. Nation-wide adoption of the system would require millions of readers and hundreds of millions of RFID tags.
VTT researchers publish high-technology research results in Finnish and international scientific and scholarly journals, technical or trade journals, books, conference proceedings, patents, and VTT's own publications series.
